For the last couple of years, I've been helping my husband with his lawn service. It's been a great form of exercise. I've enjoyed meeting the people and the satisfaction of a job well done is priceless.
This year mowing has become a problem for me. I helped my husband mowing for two hours on Saturday. My right knee and leg was hurting so bad when I finished, I could barely drive home. It was still hurting just as bad yesterday. Good news....bad news.......I'm feeling better today....but the phone rang....time to go cut a lawn. It's not quite so bad when I can stay on flat land...but that's tough to do here in Tennessee. We live in the part of the state that's called the "Rolling Hills".
Today, when my leg starts hurting...I'm going to stop immediately. I always push myself until I just can't tolerate the pain anymore....then I quit. We'll see how that works....otherwise, I'm going to have to find an alternative method to exercise.
I've lost 10 pounds since I've serious started my weight loss program again. I want to keep it off and continue to lose. I'm grabbing my pedometer and my water. Need to get done before it gets toooooooo hot.

Losing Weight with Laughter
When I saw this weight loss skit with Richard Simmons and Drew Carey....I couldn't stop laughing. This little video will add a little humor to your day. I hope everyone enjoys it. I've watched it numerous times and still laugh so hard every time I watch it.
I'm going to have to do some research on calories burned while laughing. What better way to lose weight than to laugh the pounds away.
I'm off to help my husband in the new garage. My 5 minute break is up. I'm trying to help put up OSB board....yikes that stuff is heavy. My arms already feel like jello.

Quit Smoking Anniversary
Time has gone by so fast. I can't believe it's been two years since I had my last cigarette. Actually it's July 28th is the official date. I am one of those awful reformed smokers. I hate the smell of smoke.
I tried so many different methods to quit smoking with no success. It was nothing to chew nicorette gum and have a cigarette with it. It seemed the more I tried to quit, the more I smoked. I was up to three packs a day when I put them down.
I finally realized, the only way I was going to be able to beat this addiction was with God's help. I prayed and prayed. I prayed for months....I only got seemed to get worse. I was about to give up. (I had quit once before for 5 years but started again the day my daughter died.)
I figured God was tired of me asking for stuff. Low and behold....I'll never forget that morning. I woke up and I had this feeling inside..... I can't even describe it. It was like this little voice said, today is the day you throw away those cigarettes. I told my husband and mom, "hey hey guys....today is the day.....I'm done smoking."
I still wasn't sure at first so I kept a carton in my drawer for about a month. I never had one temptation to have one. Since I had been smoking over three packs a day....I call that a miracle.

Sweating off the Pounds
It's been so so hot and humid here the past week. Rain all around us. All we get is threatening skies and thunder. The past three days, I've been helping my husband doing cutting grass and trimming hedges, trees, and bushes. This weather takes my breathe away. Needless to say, I was so glad we finished yesterday.
I made sure I took plenty of water with us as well as my favorite, Diet Lipton Citrus Green Tea. By the time we got done each day, our clothes were soaking wet from sweat. I know any weight loss like this is temporary.
I took my Omron pedometer with me each day as well. Although, I only cut grass one of these days, I still managed to walk over two miles each day doing the yard work. (Big yard....lots and lots of bushes)
I'm relaxing today. My knees are still giving me fits. The only thing that seems to help is staying off them for a day or two. I think I wore them out carrying mail for so many years.
My plans for lunch today is cod fish, brown rice, and a salad with fresh tomatoes from our garden.

I've lost 10 Pounds This Month
On May 28th, I decided to follow my own advice and start my weight loss program over. This time, I am following my own weight loss program. I've bought so many weight loss books and have never been able to follow any of them to the tee. So, I'm doing as Frank Sinatra would say, "My Way."
What I Changed in My Diet
I've lost ten pounds since May 28th. These are the changes I've made this past month to incur my weight loss:
I can't say I've been perfect. We have gone out to eat a few times and I've made bad food choices. I'm not beating myself up over it. I not throwing in the towel. Tomorrow is always another day.
Document Everything
I must say, I think the most important thing I'm doing, is faithfully documenting everything I eat and drink. I've been weighing myself twice a week and tracking my weight loss in the same notebook as my food and drink intake. This way I can compare the weeks with what I've ate.
Do What Works for You!
I'm sure many will disagree with my choice of weight loss...but the important thing, it works for me.

What I Changed in My Diet
I've lost ten pounds since May 28th. These are the changes I've made this past month to incur my weight loss:
- Breakfast: I don't like breakfast and that's all there is to it. I quit eating oatmeal, grapefruit, and cereal in the morning. I drink my coffee, green tea, and water.
- Lunch & Dinner: I've started making my main meal at lunch time instead of the evening as I had done in the past. I now eat salad 4/5 times a week. I am now eating fish 2/3 times a week.
- Snacks: For a snack in the evening, I've been eating the apple and cinnamon quaker little rice cakes.
- Liquids: I've traded my diet coke in for plain old water.
I can't say I've been perfect. We have gone out to eat a few times and I've made bad food choices. I'm not beating myself up over it. I not throwing in the towel. Tomorrow is always another day.

Big Snake = Great Workout
The other day when my mom and I were going to town, I notice a big snake laying near a tree by the flower garden. I said to mom, "I'm going to kill Alex for putting that fake snake there. He knows how much I hate them." When my husband got home, I told him to pick up that dumb snake and throw it away. He picked up a stick near the tree and told me I must be seeing things. Then I knew...OMG....I had seen a REAL snake. I was panic stricken at just the thought of seeing that thing again.
Mom and I then went to sit in the gazebo. Still upset about the snake, I told my husband, I bet that thing is in that grill cover you left on the ground. He went over to pick it up ....sure enough...I saw the tail. I let out the biggest scream and ran into the house with mom right behind me.
Of course, the snake got away from him and slithered into the flower garden next to the house. Alex was using the rake trying to find him to no avail. Then, low and behold, I saw the thing trying to climb through the metal vent to get under the house. At the top of my voice I shouted, "There he is...there he is...get him Alex...get him." My husband was able to catch him. Whew...what a relief. He said it was a rat snake and took it way down by the pond to let it go.
When my husband got back, I had him take the weed eater and cut down every vine and flower in that flower bed next to the house. I then took the rake, hoe, and shovel and dug everything out of there. I now have a large area of just dirt. (NO snake is going to hid out there again.) I wasn't smart enough to wear gloves. Needless to say, I'm sporting blisters on my left hand. (wondering why it's just my one hand)
That snake lead to a great workout I had not planned. I can feel it in my shoulders and upper arms. Working in the flower bed is a lot more fun than lifting weights. Now I'm going to have to figure out what to put in that flower bed.

Weight Loss Week In Review
This has been an amazing week with lots of great information. Here is a small round up of weight loss information posted on my blogs this week.
Calorie Quality: A personal trainer from California, Joshua Carter brought up a very good point about not all calories being equal. Foods have an impact on your hormonal response and your primary concern for weight loss should be to manage them. The quality of your calories is the critical point.
Four Things You Didn't Know About Me: An idea spurred by my friend Chris Brogan had me sit down and post four things you may not know about me. Somewhat interesting I guess if you want to get to know your host a bit more.
Shawn Phillips Podcast: Shawn's weekly Start Strong Monday Podcast to get you going for the week was about hunger vs cravings. A great listen. All of Shawn Phillips audio clips are archived for ease of listening. Listen to each of his 2 to 4 minute talks to learn more about metabolism and fat burning.
Luci's 100 Pound Weight Loss Story: One of my favorite weight loss forum members posted her answer to my question "What Does It Feel Like To Have Lost 100 Pounds?". She's working on her next 100 pounds now by adding in boxing. Yes, she's boxing at 385 pounds which makes me ask "What's Stopping You From Achieving Your Weight Loss Goals?"
Dangers Of Aspartame: Anything marked as a "diet food" is designed to keep the company in business. Their products get you addicted, keep you fat and then market it back to you based on emotions. The "Diet Food" is designed to keep you fat and keep them in business. If you want to help them make money then keep drinking the sugar free soda's and diet foods. Personally, I'd rather not. I'd rather make choices for me than for them. I'll be writing more about this in the future so you're better informed.
Celebrate Your Success: A very inspirational message regarding acknowledging your success for achieving little milestones and how important it is.
Swiss Ball Exercises: The first in a series of Swiss Ball Exercises that I've got coming out. This one features the Dumbbell Bench Press done on a Swiss Ball. Make sure you subscribe to the posts using the form in the upper right hand corner so that you don't miss the future exercise tips. Each Tuesday features a new weight loss exercise.
Eliminate Cravings: I answered a reader's question in regards to "How To Deal With Temptation And Cravings". Keep the questions coming, the answer may help many people. If you don't ask, I can't answer the question right? I have an entire section regarding reader questions.
Weight Loss Tips: I just began a new feature in regards to weight loss tips and anything that will help you take action by adding in one new habit each week. I'm calling it 3 Tips Friday. No sense waiting until Monday to start, so begin on Fridays. This gives you a 3 day jump on your friends who choose NOT to act until later. Take action, there's power in it.

Burned 572 calories already this morning
It's another hot and humid day in southwestern Tennessee. I've already been outside digging in another flower bed this morning. My goal is to dig up every tiger lily in this yard. Although they bloom for a long time, I don't like the way they look when they quit blooming (good brush for snakes to hide).
Since my pedometer can't measure this kind of work...I went to ability.org to calculate my calories burned. Wow....572 calories. It's a great site. By just putting in your weight and time worked, it will show the calories burned for lots of activities.

Walked over 12,000 Steps
It was another hot and humid day yesterday. We left about 7 am to get an early start cutting our lawns. I remembered my pedometer and plenty of water and diet Lipton green tea. I always use the push mower and my husband uses the riding mower. That thing scares me so I'd rather use the push one.
I checked my pedometer and I had walked a whopping 12,000 steps. Wooohooo!! My right knee and leg were hurting by the time we got finished but they were feeling better by late evening.
I've lost another 2 pounds since my last weigh in. Losing weight this time is so much easier since I've made up my own plan of action. Secondly, and just as important in my weight loss program, document, document, document. I can't stress that enough. Seeing what you eat and drink in black and white really makes you more accountable. I always write down what time I ate as well. It helps me as well so see my eating patterns and what I need to concentrate on in changing to succeed at this weight loss.
We all know what are healthy choices we need to make in our lives to lose weight. All your plans and books out there tell you exercise along with proper food choices will be a win-win weight loss program.
Which ever weight loss program you do.....don't give up. There are still 183 days left this year to make a difference. Always remember to drink plenty of water!!!!

Weight Loss Tip 48: Over Eaters need help. Dont try to do it alone!

Sizing Up Your Food Portions
It's hard to figure out what or how much makes up a portion when preparing your food. It's obvious I've had to many portions on my plate and that is why I'm now having to lose weight.
Here are a few samples of various food and what counts as a serving:
1. BREAD: 1 slice of toast, 1 ounce of boxed cereal, 1/2 cup cooked cereal, 1/2 bagel
2. VEGETABLES: 1 cup raw, leafy vegetables, 1/2 cup cooked vegetable
3. FRUIT: 1 med piece of fruit, 1/2 cup mixed fruit, 3/4 cup fruit juice
4. MILK: 1 cup milk or yogurt, 2 ounces of processed cheese
5. MEAT: 2-3 ounces cooked lean meat, poultry or fish (size of deck of cards)
6. OTHER FOODS: 1 egg, 2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1/3 cup nuts.
I have found that using a small size plate helps. It looks like you have a lot more to eat. For me, it's mind over matter. As a child I was always made to clean off my plate. I still live that way but have changed to a smaller plate. Some things are so ingrained, I just can't change. It's all about adapting to continue this successful weight loss journey.

Great John Toilet Supports 2000 Pounds
Great John Toilet For Big Bums
When I first saw an article about this toilet, I thought it was a gag, but I've since changed my opinion after reading more.
The Great John Toilet is the creation of a company that designs bathroom products for larger sized people. They're filling a need for a growing America.
This toilet is 150% larger contact surface than normal but also allows for children or smaller sized people to use it as well. The toilet seat is 6" longer in front and 17" higher which makes for ease of getting up. The seat is designed so that it wont shift or pinch under the weight.
Personally, having been nearly 500 pounds myself, I see where this Great John Toilet would be an asset to the larger individual. It has a 2000 pound capacity as well.. er.. for the person, not bowel movements.
For more info about Great John and their line of bathroom products, visit GreatJohn.com

Another day walking more than 10,000 Steps
Yesterday, we went to two different Lowe's stores in our area to get more stuff we need for the garage. Of course, I had my Omron pedometer in my pocket. (So easy to use...so light weight) I like that store as much as my husband. I'm always finding something I want there...even if it means putting it on a wish list.
When we were walking to the truck after the second trip, I looked at my pedometer. It was close to 10,000 steps. I usually walk between 2500 and 3000 steps during my day at home. I was surprised and pleased to see I had walked that much.
If it gets too hot or too cold, I'll just be going to my local Lowe's to walk. The aisles are nice and wide and pushing a cart takes some pressure off my knees. The concrete floors are exactly ideal but as long as I keep moving it's ok.
So, if you are trying to figure out where to walk, try Menards (they have wide aisles too), Home Depot, or Lowes. When I lived up north, I use to find the malls kind of crowded and couldn't walk as fast as I wanted quite often. Down here, there aren't any inside malls close. I'm glad I accidentally found another place to go.
My weight loss plan for today is: no breakfast.....grilled boneless chicken breast, brown rice, fresh peas, and a garden salad for lunch....supper......will be the other half of my chicken breast along with a salad and some squash from our garden. When I feel like snacking today....I've got garden tomatoes already sliced and will also have so green grapes I bought yesterday. Of course, today I plan on drinking plenty of water.

Lose Weight Laying Down
I was on Ebay and decided to check out the latest on weight loss items. Weight loss with the Alpha 33 Spa (Health Environment Machine), don't like to work out, take pills, or shakes, don't worry, you can lose weight laying down. Priced at just $5,500.00.
Although I'd love to lose weight laying down, I find this claim hard to believe. It looks like a sauna to me. You may sweat off some of your water...but that isn't real weight loss. Needless to say, that weight loss is temporary.
So far no one has bid on this item, but there are still 6 days left. I wonder...will anyone be that desperate to lose weight...they'd buy this thing?

Plan a Healthy Diet Using Food Labels
To help consumers plan a heathy diet, FDA and USDA have revamped food labels. By law, most food labels must now display a nutrition facts panel containing information about how the food can fit into an overall daily diet. Nutrition facts state how much saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber and certain nutrients are contained in each serving.
On the food label %daily value shows what percentage of a given nutrient is provided in one portion for daily diets of 2,000 calories.
Whether or not a food fits into a weight-loss diet depends on what other foods you eat with it that day. For most people, the goal is to select a variety of foods that together add up to approximately 100% of the daily value for total carbs, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals: total fat, cholesterol and sodium each may add up to less than 100%.
Look for foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Fiber can be an important aid in weight maintenance because eating enough if it can help a person feel full and thus not eat as much.
And as with any weight loss program......drink lots of water. If you need to drink soda, make it diet.

And as with any weight loss program......drink lots of water. If you need to drink soda, make it diet.

Lose Weight Following Your Own Pyramid
The USDA has a program called My Pyramid.gov. This site allows you to build your own pyramid. You put in your age, height, weight and time you spend daily doing exercise/physical activity. It even has a pyramid tracker. It will then recommend what your daily intake of the food groups should be. You then can use your pyramid tracker to watch your results.
There is a lot of information at this site. It even covers kids starting at the age of 2. This site even has a game called Pyramid Blast off for kids. They can reach Power Planet by fueling their rocket with food and physical activity. "Fuel" tanks from each food group helps kids to keep track of how their choices fit into My Pyramid.
Losing weight can be fun when you design your own personal program. Anyone that has tried to lose weight, has tried more than one program or diet pill with varied success. Why not try writing your own weight loss program. We all know our own bodies better than anyone else. Try different things within the program and track them.
The important thing in implementing your own weight loss program, don't get discouraged. Give yourself time to see what works best for you. I can't emphasize enough......document ..document ...document daily. It will show you what weight loss program is working best.

My Mom........I'm in Awe
My mom is 79 years old and still as sharp as a tack. I'm so amazed by her memory. She can still recite long poems and sonnets she had learned in high school. (Graduated in 1946) We watch Jeopardy and she amazes me at all the weird off beat questions she knows the answers to as well.
I shared a conversation I had on the phone with one of my children...or should I say lack of conversation. (The hello, good bye...just needed some info kind of call.) She remembered the following from her childhood years: "A son is a son until he gets a wife, a daughter is a daughter her entire life." I think that sums things up perfectly.

Weighing All the Facts and Fighting Back
I recently joined a group called Sisterwoman. It's a site where people share personal stories and where you get support and encouragement from other members.
I wanted to share an article having to do with child custody and abuse.( give the site a few seconds to load...and the voice with start automatically) It is heart wrenching to say the least. Rather than just talk about the cases, we need to write/call our congressman and relay our concern with these issues.
People in these situations need support and encouragement from all of us. Leaving them a message could be what makes the difference between them giving up or fighting on. Take the time and leave a message.

Amazed at the "YARD" Sales
I haven't lived in the south very long so I'm still amazed at some of the sights I encounter. People literally put the "Yard" in yard sales down here. It's nothing to see piles of clothes heaped up on the lawn at a typical yard sale. The classier sales have clothes piled sky high on tables. I even drove by a sale along the highway. A person just stopped their car in a pull off area and were selling stuff out of their trunk as well as having many piles of clothes laying in the grass. A sign saying "Yard Sale" leaning up against the car.
I haven't stopped at any of these sales. I'm not above wearing used clothing. I just don't like having to dig through wrinkled stuff laying on the ground to find a bargain.
I know one thing, if I ever have a "Yard" sale, my clothing will be hanging on racks and folded on tables. Maybe the people down here will be as shocked to see my sales as I was to see theirs.

Low Calorie...No Fat Snack
Many trying to lose weight become victims of the snack attack. It's so easy to grab a candy bar or two, a klondike ice cream bar, or a piece of pie/cake. Most of the low calorie snacks, taste awful or are so small it leaves you still wanting more.
Quaker Rice Snacks are a perfect snack. They come in several flavors but I've only tried the Apple Cinnamon. They are light, crispy and crunchy with only 60 calories in a serving (8 cakes). They have a great flavor and are filling. They are fat free and have 0 grams of trans fat.
These will make a great addition to anyone's weight loss menu.

Knowing my limitations doing yard work
I've come to the realization, I'm going to have to work within my physical capabilities. Today was a prime example of using good sense. I pushed the lawn mower for 3000 steps and my knee feels all right. The Omron HJ-112 pedometer is easy to use with many great functions.
My knee started bothering me when I was pushing the lawn mower up the slight incline. I resolved that problem by mowing sideways on the incline instead of up and down. Boy, did that make a big difference. For this customer, I have my grass cutting area mapped out....my husband will do the rest. A win-win situation. I can still help him and be able to walk with little pain.
We went out for lunch when we finished. I'm sticking to my weight loss plan. For breakfast I had one cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and a bottle of Lipton Diet Citrus Green Tea. (I just can't eat in the morning) For lunch, I had a salad, half a grilled chicken breast, and half of a baked potato. I plan on eating the other half of my lunch for supper.
Friday I plan on weighing myself. It will make a week since my last weigh in. I don't want to be like my new puppy. My husband weighed her last night and she has gained over 3 pounds this past week. The previous week she had gained over 2 pounds.
There are still 203 days to lose weight in 2007....it's never too late to start....or start over as many of us have done.

Exercising with Bad Knees/Ankles
I had suggested in an earlier post to walk in a Menards, Lowes, or Home Depot. I realize not everyone has those stores where they live. One place most towns have is a grocery store. A person can walk there with a cart for assistance. Using the cart will give you a degree of support for your knees as well as your ankles depending on how you lean on the cart. Walk the perimeter of the store pushing your cart...one time, two times, etc. Whatever is your comfort level to start out. Take your pedometer with you so you can document your progress when you get home.
As it starts to get easier and you build your confidence and stamina, add some weight to your cart. I suggest packages of dog food since the weight is on the package. The one thing nice about dog food, they come in packages ranging from 4 pounds up to 50. Putting them in the cart and back on the shelf when your done walking will also help build your arms.
Since everyone's physic is different, you have to rely on what feels comfortable for you. We are all use to pushing a grocery cart. Using it as a weight loss tool gives it a dual purpose. I can't stress enough, to document your walks when you get home. It's nice to see your progress in black and white.
There are still 180 days left to in this year to get on the weight loss bandwagon.

Lose Weight on the Dog Diet
She decided to get a dog to help relieve her loneliness. This was the beginning of the dog diet.
These are my two dogs, the newest addition, Sara 8 months old and Meadow 3 years old whom we got when she was 8 months old. My children are all grown and out of the house. These "girls" have added so much joy to our lives.
Tips from Lawson's book :
- When it comes to snacking, if your dog likes it, it's probably not good for you. ( When I eat cheddar cheese and sour cream potato chips, it's one for me, one for Meadow, and one for Sara.)
- Eat quiet foods that don't emit enticing aromas---they're good for you and won't arouse the beast in your dog. (My dogs never hang around me when I'm eating a salad.)
- Sure, you can walk your dog, but a traditional workout can be adapted to include your dog--you burn more calories and it's a lot more fun. (The dogs and I run around playing frisbee and ball in the yard. That wears us all out.)
